GDAR1975 Democracy in Multicultural World (IGE) (3 units)
The topic of democracy is important in the contemporary multicultural world nowadays in the fields of both humanities (such as philosophy) and social sciences (such as political science). In this course, students learn the basic notions, meanings, historical foundations, empirical cases, cultural debates, and significance of democracy in our world. It also examines different normative accounts of democracy from philosophical traditions such as consequentialism or absolutism in the liberalist tradition. Moreover, both western and non-western views on democracy will be introduced and claims about whether democracy can be universally justified will be expounded. This course also helps students identify, understand and reflect on the relationship between democracy and other issues such as democratic peace theory, democracy and famine, and democracy and justice. At the end of this course, students are able to strengthen substantially their reasoning and analytically present their own views and interpretations on different claims about democracy in the multicultural world.
