GCVM1057 Romantic Love in Humanistic Perspectives (3 units)

This course introduces both traditional understanding of romantic love, as well as more recent theories of romantic love and sex in humanistic perspectives. The course traverses human experience and understanding in this area utilizing insight from both arts and science. Intended to be an interdisciplinary course it will experiment team teaching and invite 1 or 2 professional guest speakers to provide important experiential insights into this area of human experience.
This course explains humanistic perspectives on romantic love from different cultures made available in literature, philosophy, religion and mythology, and supplement them with new understandings of romantic love and sex due to advances in scientific and sociological disciplines. The humanistic perspectives, together with post-modern social setting, constitute the cultural backdrop of contemporary understanding and practice of romantic love and sex, in distinction to traditional feudal practices that suppresses love and sex until now. Most recent development in alternative practice of sex and love will also be investigated. Students would also learn through tutorial some psychology of romantic love and sex, to understand their roles in the formation of modern and postmodern identity, and to assess authenticity of romantic love experience. They are also required to elaborate their own value response and personal strategy towards romantic love and sex pursuit in the world, towards wiser, more equal and more satisfying practice and experience of love and sex for a fulfilling life.
